From Snooze Button to Stride: Overcoming the Struggle to Get Out the Door and Run

18/1/2025

Picture
Getting out the door for a run can be challenging, especially when motivation wanes. Here are some strategies to help you overcome this hurdle:
  1. Prepare Your Gear in Advance: Lay out your running clothes and shoes the night before. This reduces decision fatigue and makes it easier to start your run.
    Forget The Gym

  2. Set Clear, Achievable Goals: Instead of focusing on a long run, aim for a short, manageable distance. This approach can make the task feel less daunting and increase the likelihood of getting out the door.

  3. Incorporate Enjoyable Elements: Pair your run with something you enjoy, like listening to a favorite podcast or audiobook. This can make the experience more appealing and motivate you to start.
    Reddit

  4. Accountability: Share your running plans with a friend or join a running group. Knowing someone is expecting you can provide the extra push needed to get out the door.
    Reddit

  5. Visualize the Benefits: Remind yourself of the positive feelings and health benefits you experience after a run. This can serve as motivation to overcome initial resistance.
    Running Joyfully

  6. Start with a Short Commitment: Tell yourself you'll run for just 10 minutes. Often, starting is the hardest part, and once you're moving, you may choose to continue beyond your initial commitment.
    Reddit

  7. Join a Challenge or Event: Signing up for a race or a fitness challenge can provide a goal to work towards, increasing motivation to train regularly.
    Reddit

Remember, the hardest part is often just getting started. Once you're out the door, the run usually becomes more enjoyable.

We here at Fortius Running Club realize that 2020 was and still is one hell of a year. With the absence of races and events to keep us occupied it has tested us to no end.

To say thank you for supporting us during the year we have reduced our prices going forward into 2021 and as a special offer to our current or returning members we have also discounted the membership by a further 10% just to help out your wallet a little bit more. This 10% is off our regular memberships for the month of November.
To get the 10% discount all you have to do is renew your membership before midnight November 30 and use the code RENEW42021.

In addition to add more value for members we have also partnered with local Brisbane company Scody to produce us a custom designed long sleeved running shirt for wearing before/after training or for those who are a little bit more sun conscious. This is an optional add on for your membership.

The 10% discount code is not applicable for the special memberships.

For those who just want to purchase the long sleeved tshirt by itself, a link will be posted on our Facebook page before the end of November.

group sessions are back...       fortius running club covid safe plan

31/5/2020

Picture
Well thank you QLD Premier, that was a nice Sunday surprise.

Great news, group sessions are back with a few changes. We will continue to run Thursdays group session virtually however the opportunity to run a group session on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning was too good to pass up.

Above is our Club COVID Safe Plan, please make sure you read and are aware if you are going to attend our group session. If you haven't yet bought access to group sessions then remember they are currently discounted during COVID-19 crisis. You can buy these over in the Team App Store.

We are pleased to announce that run sessions will be returning when the Stage 2 restrictions come into effect and our first running session is planned to be Tuesday 02 June so mark it in your calendar.

To help facilitate a return to running sessions we need to make sure all members have Team App on their mobile device and they have requested to be on the Fortius Running Club team. This will be vital in ensuring we meet all of our obligations set out by the QLD government. We also encourage the use of the COVID SAFE app.

If you don't have Team App yet please see the below instructions for more information.

You will now be required to RSVP to the running sessions so that the coaches can keep track of who is attending should any contact tracing be required. All members that intend to come to the session must RSVP in advance. This is non-negotiable. If you turn up to a session and have not RSVP'd you may be turned away. Training sessions will also be capped to ensure we meet the set government requirements of 20 (please note you will see a lower cap set in team app, this is to ensure the coaches and other observers can attend if required).

If the cap is reached and you RSVP you will be placed on the waiting list. The waiting list will self update as people update their individual RSVP. For example if you are first on the waiting list and someone updates their RSVP to "No" you will automatically be bumped up the list and have a spot. The waiting list is populated by time order so first in first served basis.

You will be responsible for checking your attendance status the night prior to the session, the club will do its best to notify you of your status the night before via the Team App functionality however the ultimate responsibility lays with the member. Should you update your RSVP to "NO" after 8pm the night prior to the commencement of training this will be classed as a no show as you have reduced the ability of another club member to attend. If a club member does this causing you to be bumped up to the "YES" list and you no show because you weren't aware this will not count towards as a no show. Coaches will be aware of who updates their RSVP late.

If you RSVP "Yes" and then don't turn up there will be a two strike policy and should you do it again you will automatically be waitlisted for future events. We know this may seem harsh however we are endeavouring to make it fair and equitable for everyone.

We expect this requirement to be in place for approx 6 weeks until Stage 3 comes in, after which we will return to normal and return to training with SBTC.

When you RSVP you will be asked three questions, one, whether you have read the Fortius Running Club COVID safe plan (HERE) and two whether you are fit and well and not showing any signs of a cold, flu or COVID, and three that if you develop symptoms after your RSVP or generally feel unwell you will not attend training. You must answer these questions truthfully by confirming YES OR NO in the answer box and should anything change after you have RSVP'd you must update your RSVP to reflect this. Anyone showing signs of being unwell will be turned away and prevented from attending training.

Coaches will take a roll call of attendance at the start of every session so please ensure you arrive early. There will be hand sanitiser available at the start and all attendees must wash or sanitise their hands prior to starting the session. Throughout the session all attendees must make sure they maintain the required social distancing at all times. This applies to after the session at coffee as well.

We are aware that some club members prefer to train by themselves during this time however we kindly ask that if you are planning on not running with the club and organising your own training with other club members that you plan to meet at an alternative location or do not meet until the training group has departed to remove any perception that we may be breaching the regulations. This also applies to coffee afterwards. We would suggest that you change out of club kit after the session if you are going to stay and enjoy a coffee.

Please remember at all times to keep a safe distance, maintain good hygiene practises at home and outside, stay home if you're feeling unwell, and most importantly look after each other.

Stay safe out there folks and remember this is just temporary provided we continue to play by the rules. If you have any questions please email [email protected]

Regards,

Simon
Club President

How did you get into running?
I used to run on-and-off, usually before a fun run like Bridge-to-Brisbane, but never took it very seriously until the day I decided to do my first GCHM. I joined a training club which got me into Parkrun and then became a regular runner.

What’s your favourite way to spend a weekend?
Socializing with family and friends, Park-run on Saturday, a run with friends on Sunday morning, spending time at the beach and the movies.

What type of music are you into while running, if any?
I don’t listen to any music when I’m running.  I prefer to listen the sounds of nature; the birds, water, rustling leaves etc
